Gravel, slab or deck: prepping your base like a pro

DRAFT — TO BE REVIEWED BY THE TEAM BEFORE PUBLICATION

An outdoor sauna needs a base that is level, draining and stable — not necessarily a concrete slab. A bed of compacted 0–3/4 gravel, 15 to 20 cm deep, works for most barrel saunas and light cabins. What matters most is level: more than a centimetre out over the length makes the door hard to close and hurts drainage.

Draft — to be reviewed by the team. Add the depths actually used on recent jobs, plus a photo of a well-prepared base versus one that had to be redone.

The three options, in short

| Base | When to choose it | Watch out for | |---|---|---| | Compacted gravel | The most common solution | Define the area and compact in layers | | Concrete slab | Permanent install, large model | Build in a slight slope for drainage | | Existing deck | When it's already level and solid | Verify the load capacity |

What has to be ready on the day

The most common mistake

Underestimating drainage. A perfectly flat base that holds water eventually works the bottom of the walls. A very slight slope, or a gravel bed that lets water through, solves it for years.

Frequently asked questions

Can a sauna sit directly on the lawn?
We advise against it. The ground moves with freeze-thaw, moisture wicks up into the wood, and you lose level within a season.
Does an existing wooden deck work?
Often yes, if it's level and the structure carries the load. A sauna full of water and bathers weighs more than people expect — have the capacity checked.
Do you prepare the base for us?
We can handle it, or work with the base you already have. Tell us at quoting time, not on the morning of the delivery.
